Last Saturday, August 24th, I embarked on an adventure from Tulsa to Wichita, Kansas, with the goal of capturing some incredible aerial action at the Frontiers In Flight Airshow. The drive itself was a sight to behold—storm clouds loomed in the distance, putting on their own performance as they slowly dissipated, leaving behind clear skies and perfect photography conditions.
Armed with a rented NIKKOR-Z 800mm f/6.3 lens from @lensprotogo, I was ready to get up close and personal with the aircraft. Let me tell you, that lens was a game-changer! The power and clarity it provided allowed me to capture the performances in stunning detail. From the thundering jets to the graceful vintage planes, each moment was a thrill to document.
However, no great adventure is without its hiccups. In my excitement, I left my spare camera battery at home, still sitting on the charger. As fate would have it, my camera decided to call it quits just before the Blue Angels took to the sky. Missing their performance was a bummer, but it taught me a valuable lesson—always double-check your gear before hitting the road!
On the bright side, the day wasn’t just about the planes. I met a lot of amazing people who share the same passion for aviation. Plus, I got to hang out with my best friend, Zac, and his family. After the show, we made a pit stop at the Taco Shop for a much-needed refuel before heading back to Tulsa. There’s something about a day filled with jet engines and tacos that just feels right.
Despite the battery mishap, the day was a blast, and I’m already looking forward to the next airshow. Until then, I’ll be double-checking my gear and dreaming about those perfect aerial shots.
