Introducing Precious Metals Inventory Tool 2.0

Introducing Precious Metals Inventory Tool 2.0

I’m excited to share a little project I’ve been working on during my weekends and evenings. It’s a passion project born from my own frustration with tracking my modest silver and gold collection.

Meet Precious Metals Inventory Tool 2.0, a free, client-side web application that helps you track your physical precious metals inventory with ease.

Why I Built This?

Like many of you, I started collecting physical silver and gold as a hedge against economic uncertainty. But as my collection grew, I found myself struggling with:

  • Tracking purchase prices across different dealers
  • Calculating my average cost per ounce
  • Monitoring how my holdings compare to current spot prices
  • Figuring out my total premium paid (that extra cost above spot)
  • Simply remembering where I bought each item!

Spreadsheets worked for a while, but they became clunky. Commercial solutions either cost money or felt like overkill for a personal collection. So, being technically inclined, I decided to build my own solution, strictly as a fun learning project.

What It Actually Does (No Fluff)

This is 100% a pet project.

I built it for myself first, and I’m sharing it because I thought others might find it useful too.

Here’s what it offers:

  • Track your silver and gold holdings with details like type, weight, purchase price, and location
  • Monitor spot prices (manually entered—no live API for now because, well, pet project!)
  • Automatic calculations for:
    • Current value based on your spot price
    • Premium paid per ounce
    • Total premium across your portfolio
    • Profit/loss calculations
  • Import/export functionality (CSV, JSON, Excel, PDF, HTML)
  • Complete privacy—all data stays in your browser (more on this below)
  • Responsive design that works on mobile but ideal for desktop

Important things to know:

  • All your data is stored only in your browser’s local storage
  • Clear your history? Data’s gone. Use private browsing? Won’t save.
  • No cloud backup, no servers, no nothing—it’s completely client-side
  • I’m not a financial advisor, and this tool shouldn’t be treated as financial advice
  • It’s free, always will be, and has no ads (because profit wasn’t the point!)
